John
and Donna Matthews-Brown (recently married) are owners of the Downey
Ridge herd. Raising llamas provides them the perfect farming
adventure, making use of their combined talents and their love of
the outdoors. One of the many purposes of Downey Ridge is
to ensure this new adventure in their lives (marriage) is enjoyed
to the fullest.
The addiction began with Donna when she started assisting some of the original llama owners in Virginia with llama health issues back in 1987.
A sheep producer and veterinarian by trade, Donna was quickly
consumed by the llama community. Every moment she had to spare was
spent with her llama herd. Currently, fifty percent of her veterinary
practice involves camelid medicine.
 John
enters the picture three years ago, a retired principal from Annapolis,
Maryland, spending his days avidly hunting and fishing, living in
one of the most remote areas of Page County. His passion for viewing
wildlife and catching fish is well served by the bounty of song
birds, turkey, bear, deer, raccoons, and squirrels that wander through
the field in front of his cabin.
And the only events that have affected or influenced
Donna's life in a bigger way than the entrance of llamas in 1987
has been meeting John Brown, enjoying his cabin in the woods, and
now having the pleasure of walking through life as a couple. Add
to this the fun that raising llamas in the Shenandoah valley affords.
John brings with him a lengthy lease to an amazingly beautiful piece of land. Over two hundred acres in Overall, a small town half way between Luray and Front Royal.
The farm belongs to Freda and Clyde
Downey who kiddingly admit they long ago adopted John as their surrogate
son as he practically grew up in their Northern Va. home with their
son Jack, one of John's best friends all through high school and
college.
The generosity of the Downey's has provided John
and Donna a chance to raise llamas two miles from their cabin on
one of the most gorgeous farms in the valley. And hence the name,
Downey Ridge Farm. Truly on top of the world with llamas.
